SIMPLE YELLOW MUNG DAL

We all have that one dish that gives us a warm hug after days away from home or when recuperating or simply missing HOME. For me it is this simple Mung Dal. Its quick, easy and effortless. Its nutritious, easy to digest and helps lower cholesterol. This is the most popular dal in every Banya household like mine!

Ingredients:

Yellow Mung Dal, 1 cup
Turmeric Powder, 1.5 tsp
Salt to taste
Asafoetida, a pinch
Ghee, 1 tbsp
Red Chili Whole, 1
Cumin Seeds, 1 tbsp
Red Chili Powder, 1 tbsp
Fresh Coriander, 1 tbsp finely chopped
Tomato, 1 small, finely chopped
Green Chili, 1, finely chopped

Procedure:

1. Wash the dal thoroughly, rinsing it in running water until the water appears clean. Soak it in 2 cups of water for atleast an hour. Next pressure cook the dal with a tsp of turmeric and salt, giving it one whistle.

2. Heat a  pan, once hot add in the ghee and let it heat.

3. Add in the cumin seeds and once they start to change color add in the whole red chili and asafoetida and green chilies.

4. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and add in the remaining turmeric powder.

5. Once the tomatoes soften add in the coriander cumin powder, red chili powder and mix well.

6. Add in the boiled dal and mix well. Let it cook on medium heat for 5 minutes and the dal is ready.

7. Dish it up with a gallop of ghee or as is and enjoy it hot!

Note: This recipe can be used for any of the other dals too like Urad Chana Dal, Whole Green Mong Dal, etc. Just replace the Yellow Mung Dal with your desired dal and follow the steps.
